Morgins is not just a winter resort. Summer in the Alps is wonderful and a hugely under-rated holiday experience. There is a massive amount to do, even for the most active families.
Just 30 minutes from Morgins is Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) and the town of Le Bouveret, the centre of water sports in the area, where you can hire boats, go sailing, windsurfing and water-skiing, take a paddle steamer around the lake or just enjoy the beaches.
The town also offers an aqua park (open all year), a steam train park, and a parascending and hang-gliding centre.
The bigger towns, such as Lausanne, Evian, Thonon and Montreux, venue of a world famous jazz festival each July (www.montreuxjass.com) are all well worth visiting.
Walking and Hiking
Morgins is the perfect centre for these activities. Enjoy a gentle stroll around the nearby lake and in the valley or, for more energetic hikes, take to the mountains, possibly making use of the ski lifts to give you a head start. There are themed walks you can select and, for the very energetic, excursions can be made using the mountain huts for overnight stops. All the trails are clearly marked.
Mountain Biking
A sport that is hugely popular in the area, Morgins is world renowned for mountain biking and has hosted the World Downhill Championship. Now that the ski lifts have been adapted to take bikes, there is a huge network of marked mountain downhill trails, which are thrilling to ride and offer stunning scenery. Bike hire is available in the village.
Swimming
Just yards from the chalet is an outdoor pool. This has great facilities for kids, including a grassy play area, tennis courts, table tennis, a climbing wall and a good restaurant.
Golf
There are several good golf courses nearby. Aigle is the closest, but the world famous course of Crans sur Sierre is just over an hour away.
Shopping, Markets and Thrills!
Just around the corner, only three miles away in France, is the village of Chatel, which provides plenty of activity in the summer. Bustling with shops and a Wednesday market, there is also a pool with spectacular views. For the thrill seeker there is the 'Fantasticable', a zip-wire that whisks you at 60 mph from one 1,000 metres mountain top to another. Also, there are the 'Devilcarts', go-karts that hurtle down the mountain piste after being taken up by the draglift.
Horse Riding
Riding is available in Morgins. Wonderful treks can be arranged with overnight stops in mountain bothies.
River Sports
River activities such as rafting, canyoning, canoeing are available on the River Dranse below Abondance in France.
Parapenting and Paragliding
Tandem rides or even solo lessons can be booked with a local guide.
Summer Skiing
This is available at Saas Fee and Les Diaberets.
Tree Top Adventures
This is a popular activity in Valais and involves zip-wires, trapezes and swings high up in the trees using safety harnesses. The closest is at Champoussin, 40 minutes' walk from the top of the chairlift or 20 minutes by car.
